On the Brink?: An Analytical Overview of China-Taiwan and Lessons from Ukraine

This special report provides a timely overview of Taiwan - China relations and the current dispute, before delving into how recent events are seeing this change and providing a forecast for what may happen next. We uniquely utilise a comparative approach, analysing how the Russian invasion of Ukraine might impact, parallel, or inform the current rising tensions. The report is broken down into four key parts:

1) A historical analysis of China and Taiwan; their relations, economic ties, and divergent interpretations of sovereignty.

2) A political analysis of both parties; domestic politics and population sentiments towards the Ukraine conflict and the dispute. It also analyses the impact other state actors such as the US have on China-Taiwan relations.

3) Geopolitics and foreign policy; delves into external events and issues which have had a bearing on the Taiwan-China dispute and the evolving responses to these by China and Taiwan.

4) A forecast; scrutinising the historical, political, and military projections of the dispute and what is likely to happen next.
