Casualty Update: Eleventh Day of War- 6 March 2022 22:33 (GMT)

The end of this week has brought on more casualties, this including deaths, injuries, higher refugee numbers as well as damage and destruction to infrastructure and military equipment.

Refugees

As of 5th March 2022 the UNHCR estimates that a total of 1,534,742 has fled Ukraine, this number being nearly double that of four days ago.

Whilst the majority of the people are still fleeing to the neighbouring countries, especially Poland, some are travelling further out in Europe to the Baltics, the Balkans as well as other Western European countries.

Civilians: Deaths and Injuries

Just like the refugee numbers, civilian deaths and injuries continue to rise. The OHCHR (as of 6th March 2022) estimated that there have been a total of 1,123 civilian casualties, of which 364 people were killed and 759 injured.

The OHCHR has also said that this number is very likely to be higher as there is a lack of or a delay in getting information on casualties especially in some of the worst hit regions of Ukraine.

Forces: Deaths and Injuries

Since the briefing on 2nd March 2022, the Russian Ministry of Defence has not continued to quote figures on deaths or injuries of the Ukrainian forces. Neither have they made any further comments regarding the losses and injuries of their own forces.

On the other hand, the Ukrainian Foreign Affairs Ministry continues to provide daily figures of casualties of the Russian forces. Today they estimated around 11,000 personnel to have been killed in the entire eleven day period. They have not provided figures on injured individuals.

Military Equipment and Vehicle Losses

Russia’s MoD in today’s briefing stated that the Ukrainian forces has suffered the following losses regarding equipment between 5th March and 6th March 2022:

  • 3 Su-27 fighters

  • 3 unmanned aerial vehicles in the air

  • 11 assault aircraft

  • 2 helicopters

Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs provided statistics regarding the Russian forces for the entire eleven day duration of the conflict as follows:

  • 44 aircraft

  • 48 helicopters

  • 285 tanks

  • 60 cisterns

  • 4 UAV

  • 109 artillery pieces

  • 50 MLRS

  • 447 vehicles

  • 2 vessels

  • 21 anti-aircraft warfare systems

It must be noted for all of the numbers presented above that these cannot be fully or at all verified, with some being speculative estimates. It must also be noted that these numbers are changing rapidly with continuous updates. Thus, none should be taken as hard facts.
