Conflict Update: Ninth day of war- 4 March 2022 21:00 (GMT)


Day 9 started with a fire breaking out in a training building outside a nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia after shelling by Russian forces. Around 4:20am (GMT), Ukrainian emergency services confirmed that the fire was extinguished. Amid fears, US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and UN atomic chief confirmed that there was no elevated radiation readings. According to  IAEA, Ukraine also reassured that fire at site of Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has not affected “essential” equipment and stated that radiation levels remained within normal limits. The UN Security Council has called an emergency meeting in response to the attack on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. The emergency meeting was held at 4:30pm GMT in New York, where the United States and its allies criticized Russia over the shelling and seizure of the nuclear power plant.

Local authorities in Ukraine said that Russian forces continue to control both local and regional government buildings in Kherson. Meanwhile, according to the UK Ministry of Defence, Mariupol remains under Ukrainian control but has likely been encircled by Russian forces and is subject to intense strikes. In a televised appeal, the mayor of Mariupol said that the city has no water, heat or electricity and is running out of food after coming under attack. An adviser to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy claimed that Ukraine has stopped an advance by Russian troops into the port of Mykolayiv, while city’s major reported fighting. While there has been no major assault on Kyiv yet, more explosions have been heard throughout the day and the capital continues to be shelled. NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, has warned that the days to come are likely to be worse since Russian forces are expected to bring in heavier weaponry. Stoltenberg added that after discussion, NATO foreign ministers agreed not to have 'no-fly zone' over Ukraine, fearing that the war could spread to other European countries. 

The UN human rights office confirmed that at least 331 civilians have been killed and 675 injured in Ukraine since the invasian started. Additionally, more than 1.2m people have fled Ukraine since the invasion began on 24 February.
