Matthew Johnson

Research Director, Europe Desk, London Politica

Matthew is a Research Director at London Politica at the Europe Desk, where he has demonstrated expertise in the areas of political risk assessment and comprehensive investigations. During his time at London Politica, he has managed an array of projects centred around European and Former Soviet Union countries. Examples include analyses of the European defence industry, contributions to UK Parliamentary discourse on foreign policy objectives within Central Asia, and research into the political dynamics of the Russian nuclear sector.

He obtained an MSc in Theory and History of International Relations from the LSE, where he gained specialisation in foreign policy analysis and environmental politics. During his studies he researched and analysed the geopolitics of Europe with a special focus on the history of the USSR. His dissertation illustrates this as he researched the Stalinisation of the Arctic during the 1920s and 1930s, analysing the effects of Soviet policies on indigenous groups in the Arctic regions.

Matthew has previously worked at Raedas as an intern at the Russia/CIS desk where he focused on investigative work in the area of disputes and arbitration. He has also worked at GPW (now part of J.S. Held) as a political risk intern contributing to the work at the firm's Russia desk.
