Political Violence in Mexico’s 2024 Elections

Mexico's June 2nd elections were historic due to the large number of public office seats up for election, including the presidency and multiple governorships. Claudia Sheinbaum, the protégé of current president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, won a decisively with 59% against Xochitl Galvez’s 28%. The election was marred by a significant presence of organised crime throughout the campaign. While organised crime is not a new phenomenon in Mexican politics, the escalating presence of criminal elements this year demonstrated the debacle of security guarantees around electoral processes in the country, particularly in regions with a weak rule of law.
