2025 Abkhazia ‘De Facto’ Presidential Elections: Between crisis and reform

Summary

Following popular backlash and unrest in November 2024, and the subsequent resignation of the then-leader Aslan Bzhania, a de facto presidential election was scheduled to take place in Georgia's breakaway region of Abkhazia on 15th February, and heading into the second round on 1st March 2025. The election, like many before it, puts the question of stability versus reform on the ballot.
