Libya: LNA offensive marks deepening instability

Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army initiated a major troop movement in southwestern Libya, ostensibly to combat terrorism but likely aimed at weakening the UN-recognised government in Tripoli.

Haftar's ambitions to unify Libya under his authority have resulted in prior offensives against the government in Tripoli, most recently in 2020.

It remains to be seen whether Haftar’s move will plunge the country into another civil war, or if it is an act of ‘brinkmanship’ destined to pressure Tripoli and the international community into acknowledging his dominance over Libyan politics.
