Yahya Sinwar Appointed Hamas Chief: What Does It Mean?

Hamas appointed Yahya Sinwar as its new general leader. The announcement comes after the organisation’s previous leader, Ismail Haniyeh, was assassinated in Tehran.

His appointment as the group’s overall leader represents a major victory for hardliners within the group, especially those who support aligning Hamas with Iran. However, this is hardly a momentous occasion, as Sinwar was already eclipsing Haniyeh in both popularity and political power.

Under Sinwar, the group is unlikely to change directions, but is likely to present a more unified, hard-line front, driving an even harder negotiating position.
