The Assassination of Ismail Haniyeh: Implications for the Israel-Hamas War

The successful assassinations of high-ranking Hamas and Hezbollah leaders in such close proximity appear to illustrate a newly-employed strategy on the part of Israel in its ongoing war on Hamas: the use of “leadership decapitations”.

Such a strategy would more closely align with what the United States, Israel’s closest ally, has been pushing for since December 2023.

Security experts note that while such strikes do “not constitute a decisive and existential blow”, it does, however, inflict “psychological damage on them and a very painful hit to their morale.
