Executive Summary

  • The Republic of the Philippines is an archipelagic state with a population of 119.1 million and a GDP of USD 437.1 billion. It is a middle power in Southeast Asia and a member of regional alliances such as ASEAN, RCEP, and APEC.

  • The country faces persistent internal and external security threats. Domestic threats are characterised by violent attacks from terrorist organisations and criminal groups targeting locals and foreign nationals in Mindanao Island and the Sulu Archipelago. Luzon and the Visayas Islands are generally safe to travel to.

  • Traffic congestion can be severe, especially in Metro Manila and other urban areas. Buses, ferries, and flight links connect major cities.

  • The country’s vast territory and archipelagic characteristics hinder effective governance, and corruption remains a significant problem.

  • Services comprise the predominant economic sector, accounting for half of the GDP. The country has considerable environmental hazards, with natural disasters impacting around three-fifths of its territory and most of its inhabitants.
