Executive Summary
Türkiye, officially the Republic of Türkiye, is a key regional player, with its strategic geographical position at the intersection among Western and Eastern Europe, Russia, Central Asia, the Caucasus and the Middle East.
It is indeed a key regional player, holding membership in NATO, G-20 and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, among others. Türkiye functions as a republic with Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as the head of state since 2014.
Restrictions to fundamental rights and freedoms are a reality in Türkiye, in particular with reference to political opposition and gender-related issues. The securitisation of these domains is easened by actual security risks the country faces, such as terrorism, organised crime, and geopolitical tensions, particularly with Cyprus and in relation to conflicts in Syria and Ukraine.
An important challenge for Türkiye is its seismic risk: placed on the Anatolian plaque it is highly vulnerable to earthquakes, seen in the 2023 earthquake that caused over $34 billion in damages. Priority development sectors include agriculture, energy, defense, and tourism.
